How we build
fjordFIRE keeps taking shape as we go: from using it ourselves every month, from what we read in the communities where people plan money across borders, and from sitting with the places the math and the experience still fall short. Now that it is open to everyone, the people using it shape what comes next.
The sample households you could already open from inside fjordFIRE are now open before you have an account at all. From the sign-in page, step straight into one of five fully set-up households, from someone just getting started to a couple almost financially free, across several currencies and countries. It stays entirely read-only and nothing is saved, so you can see how a finished plan looks and feels, then build your own when you are ready.
We brought in an independent tester to try to break fjordFIRE the way a real attacker would: reading across households, changing what they shouldn’t, forging a session, getting Odin to give up data it holds for someone else. The boundaries held. The few smaller, extra-safety items that came back have been worked through by hand, the same way we handle the internal correctness audits already listed here. These reviews run on a cadence, not once.
Odin, the assistant that reasons from your household’s real numbers, is now easier to find and to start with. A first-run welcome shows what it can do, and a quiet marker points to where to begin. As before, Odin only ever works from your own data, and a household admin can switch it off completely.
The monthly check-in now builds one household snapshot for the month, the same numbers no matter which of you opens it. It leads with what you actually built, then reconciles the rest in the open: your saving, plus accounts you newly tracked, plus what the currency moved, adds up to the total you see. And a change to a planning assumption, like your expected return, now shows as a re-projection instead of a month's gain.
In a household you rarely retire on the same day. Every pension now projects to its own owner's retirement age instead of one shared age for everyone, which over a long contribution is a real difference. The figure in a check-in now matches the Pensions page, because both work it out the same way.
Net-worth trends now draws a second, dashed line beside your real one: the same net worth valued at today's rates. The gap between them is the currency's effect on your trend, there to read without toggling anything. It appears only if you hold more than one currency, and you can click any line in the legend to hide it.
fjordFIRE is open to everyone, free. No invite, no waitlist, no tiers. The early-access group spent a few months using it with real money across different currencies, and what they ran into is most of what got fixed before today. Bring your own numbers: manual entry, no bank logins.
Before the doors open, we went back through the money math, who can change each account, and what happens when two people check in at the same moment. A missing exchange rate now shows a quiet dash instead of a confident wrong number. Sign-in codes work once. Actions that change or remove data ask you to confirm first. We worked through the findings by hand, one at a time.
Two quiet layers of monitoring went in behind the scenes. If fjordFIRE or one of its scheduled jobs stops running, a heartbeat check tells us within minutes rather than whenever someone happens to notice. And when something errors on your screen, we now capture the shape of the problem, self-hosted and scrubbed of personal detail first. Both let us see that fjordFIRE is working without seeing your accounts, your balances, or your email.
Exchange rates and inflation figures now retry on their own if a refresh is missed. And if the newest rate falls behind, the net-worth view shows the date it is from. That appears only for households holding more than one currency, and only once the rate is a couple of days behind rather than a few hours.
Every Odin reply now carries a thumbs up or down and an optional note, next to the copy button that was already there. It is the quickest way to tell us when an answer was genuinely useful, or quietly off, so Odin keeps getting better at the questions people actually bring across borders.
Closing your account now writes a durable record that the erasure happened, and clears the traces a sign-in attempt can leave behind. On the way out there is an optional single question, if you feel like telling us why you're going. Answering is entirely up to you, and what you write is anonymous.
The calculators built into Academy lessons are now currency-aware and prefill the household figures that matter, so a lesson runs against your situation without asking you to type it in again.

It's free. For a few months, a handful of households used fjordFIRE with real money across different currencies. That was enough to find the rough edges and smooth them. The door opens to everyone this August: your account is ready when it does.
Reaching a milestone now comes with an optional card you can share or download: FI progress markers, Coast, Barista, Lean and Fat FI, debt-free, a fully funded emergency fund, a year of runway banked, a goal met. Pick a format (landscape, story, or square) and a design. It stays privacy-safe: milestone cards carry no amounts, your name is optional, and a “current state” card only shows a figure like net worth if you deliberately turn it on. Everything renders in the fjordFIRE brand.
A new “Life happens” section on the FIRE page lets you add the real things that move a plan: a pay change, a career break, a new child, a home purchase, an inheritance or windfall, or something custom. A month-by-month projection shows how each one shifts your financial-independence date, which the standard textbook formula cannot express. Save named scenarios and compare them against your baseline side by side.
Bring accounts in from a CSV file or by pasting a table. Three steps: choose your source, map your columns (fjordFIRE suggests the mapping and flags problem cells as you go), then review exactly what will happen before anything is written: new accounts, balance updates, and any conflicts. Applying is all-or-nothing, and any import can be undone. When you give a currency, fjordFIRE resolves the country sensibly instead of guessing wrong.
You can now walk through a fully lived-in household before entering a single number of your own. Choose from several sample households at different stages, from someone just getting started to a couple almost financially free, spanning several currencies and countries. Everything is read-only, and you can leave and return to your own data whenever you like.
Your headline FI progress and years-to-FI count your Growth assets plus only the pensions that unlock by your target retirement age. Pensions locked past that age move to a separate “including pensions” total, so the main number reflects money you could actually retire on today. History charts follow the same rule, so today's figure no longer jumps at the boundary between history and live.
The post-commit screen used to be a confirmation that produced a number. Now it shows a headline change in net worth, a per-currency breakdown of what each currency contributed, per-account edits sized by their impact, and pillar cards showing how the picture changed across FI, emergency fund, relocation, and goals. Every committed check-in is saved as a frozen snapshot you can reopen any time, with the exchange rates from the day you committed kept intact.
Multi-member check-ins used to wait for everyone before computing. Now each member's check-in is its own independent event with its own snapshot. Submit when your salary lands. Your partner submits when theirs does. History shows each contribution distinctly, each clickable to reopen the view it produced.
Every Odin reply now starts from a fresh snapshot of your household: net worth, FI progress, savings rate, emergency-fund months, top accounts, last period's movement. Currency tags are consistent across every tool Odin can call, so the household's primary currency stays the primary currency wherever a number appears. The chat itself gained a sources footer telling you which data went into each answer, a copy button on every reply, and clear running/done/failed states for tool calls.
Twelve-category line-level review of every formula, FX path, inflation handling, edge case, and consistency check across fjordFIRE. A handful of findings came back and have all been patched (the substantive ones have their own entries below). Future audits run on a regular cadence.
The in-app AI is now called Odin. Norse god of wisdom, foresight, and observation, which is what a system watching a household across currencies, countries, and time is being asked to do. Plus a household-admin master switch, so the AI can be turned off entirely at the household level.
Two slightly different decomposition methods existed in different surfaces, producing reconcilable but visibly different numbers. They now use the same method, so the same household snapshot looks the same wherever you see it.
The product now has three funded pillars (Protect, Growth, Retire) and one capability metric layered across all three: Move, which tracks how many months your liquid wealth would carry you in your pinned destination. Plus a new FI-in-destination scenario: ask not just “when can I retire?” but “when can I retire and live in Lisbon?”
The Relocation Planner now converts your liquid assets into honest months-of-runway in any destination using country-specific cost data. Foreign-currency goals and household defaults use the right inflation rate for where the money has to spend.
FIRE math gained editable Lean and Fat multipliers. The household member system gained a hard-enforced viewer role: read-only across every dashboard page, suitable for an accountant or family member who needs to see but not change.
Pension accounts became first-class: access age, employer contributions, projected balance, projected post-tax monthly income at retirement. The relocation and emergency-fund pages each got their own what-if simulator. The net-worth trends page gained a drawdown view, a trailing 12-month line, an inflation benchmark, and per-period bands.
Accounts and goals can now be split between multiple household members with explicit ownership percentages. Per-member views correctly reflect joint vs sole assets across FIRE math, snapshots, and progress on goals.
FIRE math goes per-member as well as per-household: each member can override their own birth year, target retirement age, withdrawal rate, expected return, and expense share. Plus a host of collaboration upgrades: per-member snapshots, partner notifications, monthly notes, per-member chart lines, and configurable check-in reminders.
fjordFIRE installs as a Progressive Web App on iOS and Android, with a manifest, maskable icons, and an iOS install banner. Same product, no app stores. Same release cadence as the web app.
Three tracks (Foundations, Expat Edge, FI Path), schema for academy plus check-in insights, and the first courses written. The Academy is the in-app library of plain-English lessons that ships at every tier: real teaching, calculators embedded inline, no upsell.
Up to this point the project was Husholdning (Norwegian for “household”): an in-house tool, originally built to solve a multi-currency expat life. Around mid-March it became clear the same problem was a real one for a lot of people whose lives cross borders, not just one household. Time for a name worth growing into.
Net-worth trends gained an FX-attribution view that decomposes contributions into the part you organically saved versus the part the currency moved. A constant-currency chart series shows what the picture would look like if rates had stayed flat. Currency exposure became a stacked-area chart over time.
The emergency fund (Backstop) became its own pillar: dashboard widget, settings page with alert thresholds, and history. Goals got a full system in parallel: contributions and milestones, dashboard cards, account-allocation widget, and concentration-risk analysis. The day fjordFIRE stopped being about tracking net worth and became about shaping the whole plan.
A toggle that obscures every sensitive number on every page in one click: dashboard widgets, FIRE, Relocation, Goals, Interest, account cards, check-in summary. Charts and structure stay; the figures behind them go quiet. Useful for the moments when someone walks past your screen, the train table is full, or a friend wants to see how the dashboard looks without seeing your numbers.
Create a household, invite a partner, manage members and roles. The Monthly Check-in, the central ritual fjordFIRE is built around, became the main flow. Relocation gained a dual liquid-vs-total view. Currency-impact tracking landed for multi-currency households.
Changes you make through fjordFIRE go into an audit log: what changed, who changed it, when, and the value it held before. You can read the log and export it as CSV or JSON. Built in from day one, not bolted on later.
First commits. Database schema, dashboard, account types, real-estate liquidity tracking, responsive layout. Built in private as an in-house tool we needed ourselves. Three months later it would become a product.
