Emergency Fund Runway Calculator
How many months will your emergency fund really cover?
Most calculators ask for one expense number in one currency. Your life isn’t that simple. This one sums rent in NOK, groceries in EUR, and family support in INR, and tells you the truth about your liquid runway.
Rent, groceries, utilities, insurance, debt minimums, family support: what you must pay every month even if income stops. Multiple currencies welcome.
Total essential expenses: NOK 28,000/mo · Some currencies couldn’t be converted (uncommon currency for our FX source); totals shown exclude those lines.

The number that actually matters
Most personal-finance advice frames the emergency fund as “3–6 months of expenses.” That number is right in spirit, wrong in execution. The two things every generic calculator gets wrong:
- It conflates total expenses with essential expenses. Your gym membership, vacation budget, and restaurant spend are not what you cover in an emergency. The runway that matters is against the spend you must keep paying: rent, utilities, debt minimums, insurance, family obligations.
- It assumes one currency. If your salary is in EUR but your rent is in NOK and you send INR home, your real essential expense is the sum of three currencies, and your runway depends on which one you’re paying with.
What this calculator does
Liquid runway = your accessible emergency fund balance ÷ your essential monthly expenses, both expressed in your chosen display currency. Daily ECB rates handle the conversion. The status bands are the same ones the full fjordFIRE app uses for its monthly safety-net check:
- Critical: under 3 months liquid runway.
- Low: between 3 months and your alert threshold (2 below target by default).
- Adequate: between your alert threshold and your target.
- On target: at or above the months you picked.
If you enter a monthly contribution, the calculator also tells you how many months until you hit the target at that rate, so the conversation moves from “am I behind?” to “when do I catch up?”
The 3-month or 6-month question
The default fjordFIRE target is 6 months, the most defensible answer for someone with stable employment in a high-cost country with a meaningful social safety net (most of Europe). Three months is enough if you have a strong second income, recession-proof skills, or you’re early career with low fixed costs. Nine to twelve is honest for the self-employed, the high-earner with a single client, or anyone whose runway needs to include a job-search timeline. Pick the one that lets you sleep.
What this calculator deliberately doesn’t do
It treats your fund as a single liquid balance. In real life, what you call your “emergency fund” is often spread across a high-yield savings account, a brokerage, maybe even a money-market fund. Some of that is genuinely accessible same-day; some takes 2–3 business days to settle. The full app separates liquid from illiquid in the Protect pillar and uses only the liquid total for status (which is the only number that matters in a real emergency).
It also doesn’t account for cross-country variation in what an emergency costs. If you’d need this money in a cheaper country, your runway is longer than this calculator says. That’s what the Relocation Runway calculator is for.
What the full version adds
- Connects to your real accounts: no re-typing balances every time you check.
- Separates liquid from illiquid backstop assets: status reflects only what’s accessible in 48 hours.
- Drop-below alerts when runway crosses your threshold.
- Suggests how the gap could close given your real savings rate.
- Per-member view in two-person households: your runway and your partner’s, computed independently.
- Joins the rest of the picture: your FI date, your destinations, your goals.
