Relocation, cross-border FI

How far your money goes, wherever you land.

A move can pull your freedom years closer, or cost more than the brochure admits. fjordFIRE shows what your money is actually worth in the country you're weighing: the local cost of living, the daily exchange rate, and the one-time cost of leaving.

Every runway and FI date is priced on country-level cost-of-living data and daily exchange rates, recalculated on your monthly check-in.

How long your money lasts in each country

Pick a destination and see your runway in months, priced on that country’s cost-of-living level from World Bank price-level data, not a round-number guess. Country-level figures are an approximation of your exact basket; the method page says exactly what is modelled and what is approximated. fjordFIRE prices your runway across 170+ countries. Your balances and exchange rates refresh at every check-in; the country-level cost figures update when the World Bank data does, which is less often. The free calculator on this site covers 67 of them.

A fjordFIRE relocation comparison: a side-by-side table of candidate destinations (Return to Bengaluru, Valencia, Bergen) showing monthly expenses, runway, and how much sooner each reaches FI, above an FI-timeline chart.
Every candidate side by side: monthly cost, months of runway, and how much sooner each reaches FI.

A cheaper base can pull your freedom years closer

The same savings cover a very different number of years depending on where you spend them. fjordFIRE recomputes your FI date for each destination, so “retire sooner” turns into an actual figure instead of a feeling. The cost-of-living arbitrage lesson covers where the gap is real and where it closes faster than people expect.

A detailed destination comparison in fjordFIRE: Valencia Retirement at 5.5 years to FI (6.1 years sooner than home), alongside Stay in Bergen (11.9 years baseline) and Return to Bengaluru (0.9 years, 10.6 years sooner).
The same portfolio, a different FI date per country. Valencia 6.1 years sooner, Bengaluru 10.6.

What leaving actually costs

Some countries tax the unrealised gains on your investments when you stop being a resident. It can be nothing, or it can be a real number. For moves from Norway, fjordFIRE estimates it and folds the one-time cost into the destination’s runway and FI date, so the price of the move is in the picture from the start. For other departure-tax regimes it tells you one exists and who to ask; it doesn’t estimate them. You can estimate the Norwegian exit tax on this site.

A fjordFIRE relocation exit-tax panel: an estimate of Norway's one-time exit tax on unrealised gains, with fields for investment value and gain and a per-owner split, showing no exit tax due under the kr 3 million per-person deduction.

Every account in its own currency, converted daily

Salary in one currency, savings in another, family obligations in a third. fjordFIRE holds 160+ currencies across 170+countries and converts at daily rates, so a strong or weak exchange-rate month doesn’t masquerade as real progress. What each conversion costs you is worth seeing too: the currency cost calculator breaks it down.
